Brandon D. Hastings

Partner

Brandon helps clients make plans, manage risk, and resolve disputes. He handles matters across their full life cycle—from first conversations and negotiations to practical resolution or, when needed, persuasive advocacy in court and on appeal. Clients value his early case assessment, plain-English advice, and steady focus on outcomes that make business and personal sense.

"... Brandon was a skilled negotiator, and we left feeling very glad to have had him working on our behalf. We couldn’t recommend his services more highly."

He has led matters at all levels of court in British Columbia, including precedent-setting decisions in the Court of Appeal. His appellate wins have been cited with approval by appellate courts across the country, confirming his influence beyond BC. In negotiation, Brandon narrows issues and keeps momentum toward workable agreement, with his efficacy enhanced through his work as a mediator. When litigation is required, he advances applications and appeals with clear, fact-driven arguments, geared at creating the necessary environment for favourable settlement.

Brandon’s perspective blends legal judgment with business training and modern process. He surfaces key decisions early, sets no-surprises timelines, and aligns strategy with cost, risk, and objectives. He contributes to the profession as CLEBC faculty and a columnist for the CBABC’s BarTalk, and he has founded and co-founded practitioner-technologist communities (Vancouver Legal Hackers; The Justice Hack) focused on building practical tools that support fairness, efficiency, and access to resolution.
